Belle Meade Furniture

I was so excited to open an email from Layla Grayce to see they are now selling Belle Meade furniture.  The carry such beautiful, classic pieces!

I never tire of mirrored furniture!!  This bed makes me giddy!

Here are a few that caught my eye:

Grayson Bed

Sadie Dining Chair

Corinne Chest

Barclay Settee

Lafayette Chair

Marquis Table

Courtney Chest

Any of these pieces would be a great addition to your home.  And I am NOT being paid by Layla Grayce nor Belle Meade to say this- (they dont even know I exist-LOL)  but if they *were* paying me- I would so buy a piece or two for my house!!  *sigh*

Fabric Frenzy

Happy Monday friends!  Hope all of my East Coast readers are safe and sound.  I spent the majority of my weekend sifting through fabric swatches.  Im wanting some new throw pillows for my sofa because the light blue ones I originally had do not work with the new rug.  (its always something).

And on another fabric note I've decided NOT to do the stripes in my office and now have to decide WHAT to do for drapery.  Im torn between these two:

The practical side tells me to wait till I get my chair back from the upholsterer to make sure these fabrics work-but the "I want it done now" side of me says just order it and move on.  *sigh*

Coffee with...

I am so excited to introduce my new series "Coffee With.."  I have been busy interviewing either in person or via email some amazing Interior Designers and bloggers. And I will be sharing them with you over the next few months.

Today I want to introduce you to Liz Caan of Liz Caan Interiors.  I first saw Liz's work on La Dolche Vita and fell head over heels for her designs.

Not only are her designs amazing- she is a beautiful lady!!

Love her use of color!

This closet is scrumptious!

Love the color and mix of patterns in this room.

Liz's studio- All I can say is
Va-Va-VOOM!!

Liz was so gracious to agree to my interview and I love it that she says she's a "fabric & carpet snob".

When did you know that Interior Design was your passion?

I didn’t have an ah-ha moment, I took a slow and steady path and treated it as a hobby for most of my life. Like most people in this industry, I re-arranged my room every 5 minutes as a child but I was stuck with the wallpaper and the furniture my mom had chosen. So when I went off to college and had my 1/2 of a dorm room to do, I was able to create my own space away from home. I spent an entire summer, sewing and sourcing all of my bedding and accessories. Since we couldn’t paint or wallpaper, I constructed a life size upholstered palm tree that I made out of bright fabrics and put it over my bed. I think my roommate thought I was crazy, but I loved my space. Although I was an Art major and pretty sure I would be a graphic designer, I continued to decorate all our apartments and 2 homes. I made lots of mistakes (and lost lots of security deposits) along the way but I was able to use my home as a ‘laboratory’ (and I still do). It was after I left a sales job in corporate America and we moved to Boston 8 years ago, that I realized I loved this and wanted to try and make a living at it.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Inspiration is everywhere from art to the illustrations in a children’s book to my garden in the backyard. I am always making mental notes of things I see. In our home, I took a lot of inspiration from a Henri Maik painting we acquired and it really has permeated the entire house. When I need a kick, I will go through my Muriel Brandolini files for inspiration. She takes huge risks with color and paint and fabric. I love her uninhibited and unconventional approach to design.

What is your favorite book/magazine on design? How about your favorite site?

I don’t have a favorite book but I have many I love. The same goes for magazines but over the years I have most consistently loved Elle Décor. The fashionable, eclectic interiors they feature are what I find really inspirational. I have many favorite sites but I access all of them through Google Reader so I can effortlessly stay up to date. I do frequent the Barneys.com Home Section. It’s been well edited and I go there for accessories and inspiration a lot.

What is the most frustrating aspect of your job as a designer? And the most rewarding one?

The most frustrating part is the paperwork. I loathe it. I also do not enjoy collecting money, but it is all equally important. I spent 10 years in the business world and the business side of this job is just as important as the creative side. The most rewarding part is seeing a really truly happy client at the end of a project, but I also feel really good when I am able to solve a tough problem. While I don’t like problems or challenges to necessarily come up in a project, they are inevitable and the creative and strategic problem solving is what I find really rewarding.

What decorating techniques/ideas/projects would you recommend to a homeowner who wants a quick fix to their room?

Paint is a very impactful and inexpensive way to spruce up a room. I also would recommend looking at their room through the lens of a camera. The perspective changes and you will start to notice things you didn’t before. I like to visually clean up a room immediately. Clean up the edges and reduce visual noise by making a focal point and arranging the room around that. Get rid of clutter and edit the pieces and accessories. This can all be done in a weekend.

What’s something you should never skimp on when decorating your home?

Good quality textiles (and workrooms). I am a fabric and carpet snob. I think it’s really important to invest in these pieces (and people) as they will age most gracefully.

What’s your favorite color combination lately?
Greys and Lavenders with shots of pink. I can’t seem to shake it.

Most cherished possession?

My Henri Maik paintings. We have 3 and they are so cheerful and playful and make me so happy.

What would your dream project be?

A tree house. I’m a kid at heart and I’d love to design an amazing tree house...without a budget of course. Wink, wink

Thank-you so much Liz for sharing your insights and joining me for coffee (well, a virtual coffee that is).

Clients Entryway

I have a client that is doing a complete home remodel and I am so excited for the opportunity to design her interior spaces.  1st up- the entry.  This is the space directly across the front door.  It opens up to the family room on the left and a BEAUTIFUL kitchen on the right.  My client has such a eye for detail and it shows throughout this home.

This is the proposed inspiration board- It was a little more daring using the black  & cream wallpaper, but luckily she loved it and I am beyond excited!  The chairs are a bit large for the space-but we love the color-so I will be on the hunt for something smaller.  But oh how I love it!  It all started with the Amy Butler rug.

*Out of respect for my paying clients- I can not share details of my design*

A HomeGoods find

I ran into HomeGoods on Saturday to just browse the store- I didnt even grab a basket and low and behold I scored two AWESOME finds.  Does that happen to you?  When you grab a basket-you find nothing- when you skip the basket you totally find the mother-load!  No? ok maybe thats just me.  Ok-back to my find.

Well first let me show you this- from Restoration Hardware:

The Mansard Mirror- priced from $295 to $395

then this: From HomeGoods $99

Even better- they had TWO of them.  Perfect score for the double-sink bathroom in my clients home!

And while I was there this awesome gray & cream rug totally jumped into my basket- I was like "wha? you wanna come home with me?" I mean who can say no to a gorgeous thick-piled rug, right?

So my new motto from now on- is NEVER grab a basket 1st.

3 Quick Fixes for your room

If you are craving change in your home and have a limited budget- here are 3 quick fixes to get some "instant gratification".  And believe me these 3-fixes are "no brainers" and you all already know about them- Im just here to encourage you to "go for it".

#1 PAINT
The cheapest, quickest and most substantial change to any room is with paint.  You can take a dark dreary room to light and bright with just a gallon or two of paint.  Or do the opposite with your white dreary walls and warm them up with a cozy color.  For some expert advise on paint colors- read my "Favorite Paint Color Series" Part 1 and Part 2   And I've said it before and I'll say it again- Its just paint- if you hate it- paint it- or repaint it.

#2 FABRICS- (i.e. Pillows)

It is amazing how much a few throw pillows with a punch of color can change up a room. And the pillows DO NOT have to match the colors in the room.  Its totally OK to toss in that vibrant orange pillow, that pop of magenta, or that bold graphic print.  Great places to buy inexpensive pillows are HomeGoods, TJMaxx, or Target.  Or if you sew make your own.  And there are TONS of tutorials out there on how to sew a pillow.  Read Janel's easy tutorial from Isabella & Max Rooms  HERE.  Another quick way to get a pillow- placemats!  Target has some great fabric placemats that are double sided.  All you need to do is remove some of the stitching on one side-stuff the pillow and hand sew the open seam or even better- hot glue the seam up!  I do it all the time! (and burn the heck out of my fingers in the process).

#3 MOVE THE FURNITURE

When I was little and my family got bored we re-arranged the furniture.  Seriously, I can remember switching the couches around and bringing in pieces from other rooms.  It always made things feel fresh and new even though it was still our "stuff"- just seeing it in a new light.  One of my favorite things to do when Im on "home decor lock-down" is "Shop the House".  Bring that mirror from the living rom into the dining room.  Move that dresser from the bedroom to the living room.   And sing the song from Madagascar "I like to Move it" while you work.

So have fun-get bold and try that new furniture arrangement, paint that bedroom a warm cozy gray, add that hot pink pillow to your sofa.  You can do it!!

Fabrics

HappyFriday!! So I had all intentions to post something great today-but unfortunately it never happened. I spent most of the morning at Duralee sourcing some fabrics-found some great things for clients AND some fun stuff for me.

Anyone else get goose bumps when they walk into a fabric store? no? ok-maybe Im just weird that way.

P.S. if you like any of these fabrics let me know I can order them for you and its only about a 5-7 day lead time.  Im hoping to have some fun pillows up for sale in my shop soon too!!

Have a great weekend!!

Yearning for Fall

Another day of 102+ degree weather has me in a sour mood.  I am so ready for Fall.  Crisp air, chunky sweaters, Pumpkin Spice Lattes and homemade soup.  So I headed over to Pinterest to get some inspiration.

So what about you?  Are you savoring up the last sip of summer or longing for Fall?
